Puerto Banus
The official opening of Puerto Banus in 1970 was attended by the cool and rich set of the era such as Roman Polanski, the Aga Khan, Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco and Dr Christian Barnard. The entertainment was provided by a youthful (and no doubt sun-tanned) Julio Iglesias.
The centrepoint of the area is the Marina. Take a stroll along and admire boats that are twice the size of your house, at least. The folk who have these monsters
also have very nice cars and you will see more Ferraris and Bentleys down by the marina than in Knightsbridge. (note - the Bentley in the pic has the numberplate 'Brass' - these are people who don't mind flaunting their wealth!)
In addition to gawping at the cars and the boats, there are some truly exceptional shops here. Down by the marina it is mostly boutiques, and they are not all expensive, there are some decently priced ones too. My fave shop
is the 007 (952 811 395) swimwear shop which has every range going. Also on the frontline are Armani (
952 810 932)
, Eks, Hermes (952 817 125), Jitrois, Rebel 76, Princesse (952 813 812) which sells Roberto Cavalli Gomina, and Dior (952 906 525)(pictured here).
OK, now you have gawped, and shopped, time to grab a beer or something to eat. My Puerto Banus restaurant guide lists some of the places and in addition there are a few bars where you can just grab a beer and a tapa.
If you head away from the marina you will come to a commercial centre that is ok, opticians and stuff
but also a couple of bars that are very reasonable for a snack, and of course, the Corte Ingles.
Now you may see the Corte Ingles as just a department store, which it is of course, and a very good one at that, but it also offers a fantastic range of tapas in its bar! And the most sensational air-conditioning. So do yourself a favour and check it out.
There is a multi-screen cinema here and you can find out what is on by clicking here.
It is opposite the Corte Ingles and offers 2 hours free parking if you get your ticket stamped at the box office. Whilst on the subject of cinemas in Marbella, there is another with 8 screens downtown called La Cannada
Well, that's my simple introduction to Puerto Banus - enjoy. If you have any recommendations to add, let me know, I'd love to hear from you at info@marbellaexpert.com
